Slowing Down Solo: A Relaxing Getaway to Gulf Shores, Alabama

A real, no-rush travel story.

Gulf Shores Public Beach | Gulf Shores Alabama

Day 1: Flying South and Letting Go

Sometimes the best kind of trip is one with no plan at all—just you, your thoughts, and the open road. That’s what my solo trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama was about: slowing down, reconnecting with myself, and letting go of expectations. I didn’t know how much I needed this—until it happened.

Life moves too fast, and when you're running 100 miles a minute, you forget to stop and breathe.

My journey started from home base in Detroit. I flew Delta from DTW to Charlotte (CLT) for a quick family visit. I picked up my rental from Hertz—quick, smooth, hassle-free—and returning it later was just as easy.

After a few days of catching up, it was time for the solo leg of the trip. This part was all about loving me. I didn’t set a firm itinerary. I had no expectations. I splurged. I used loyalty points and miles—something I rarely use for myself.

Out-of-pocket cost for this 5-night trip? Just $155, including two Hertz rentals and three legs of Delta airfare. And it felt so good.

I flew from CLT to Pensacola (PNS) with a layover in Atlanta (ATL). This is where Day 1 officially began—and where my excitement really started to build. I was headed to a destination I’d never been to, on my own, at my own pace.

Travel Hiccups and Lounge Healing

Flight Delays, But Make It Comfy

Bad weather in the South had caused some understandable delays. Instead of letting it ruin my vibe, I headed to the Delta Sky Club at CLT.

Delays Happen, But Stress Doesn’t Have To

  • Amenities: Fresh food, full-service bar, high-speed Wi-Fi, private restrooms, and seating zones for work or relaxation.

As a Delta Diamond Medallion member, I was upgraded to First Class for the trip. That lounge access? Worth every mile. I also help my clients earn elite status and maximize SkyMiles benefits, so this kind of travel ease is something I can teach.

After a few hours, I switched to the American Express Centurion Lounge—pure luxury.

AmEx Centurion Lounge at CLT

  • Amenities: Premium hot meals, curated cocktails, spa-inspired bathrooms, shower suites, high-speed Wi-Fi, and quiet, stylish workspaces.

Want access to this level of travel ease? I can help you unlock it with the right cards and strategy.

Eventually, I landed in Pensacola, picked up another Hertz rental (late-night arrival, no problem), and made the 60-minute drive to Gulf Shores. Peaceful, smooth ride.

Day 2: Poolside Peace and Sunset Soul Food

Where I Stayed

Hampton Inn Gulf Shores

Pool: 9 AM – 10 PM, with a tranquil waterfall perfect for reading or conversation.

Other Amenities: Free hot breakfast, clean rooms, a fitness center, and genuinely kind staff.

I spent the day just how I needed: laying low by the pool, reading, soaking up the sun, and reconnecting—with friends and with myself.

Dinner with a View and Fresh Out of the Ocean Eats!

The Hangout, Gulf Shores Alabama

If you're planning a day on Gulf Shores Beach, make sure to carve out time for a visit to The Hangout—a local favorite that blends beachy fun, fresh flavors, and family-friendly entertainment all in one lively spot.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Indulge in fresh, locally sourced seafood—think peel-and-eat shrimp, Gulf oysters, and fish tacos that hit just right after a beach day.

  • Catch live music daily on their outdoor stage—perfect for kicking back with a cold drink and soaking in the coastal vibes.

  • Unwind with sunset views over the water from their massive patio—one of the best people-watching spots in town.

  • Traveling with kids? They’ll love the life-size sand pit, the Wish Wall, and a foam party happening every hour on the hour—seriously, it's a blast.

  • The spacious open-air layout makes it easy to relax, roam, and enjoy the energy of Gulf Shores at its best.

Whether you’re grabbing lunch after the beach or looking for somewhere to dance barefoot in the sand, The Hangout delivers on fun, flavor, and family-friendly flair.

Day 3: No Rush, Just Living

I booked a red-eye to stretch out my last day. After packing smart (no shower before my flight!), I headed to Pavilion Beach, a peaceful, public spot that’s clean and calming.

Caribbean Vibes……?

Fine white sand, rolling waves, sunkissed skin.

I had to pinch myself to make sure I was in fact in the US!!

Lunch Stop - Old River Grill at Flora-Bama

A Hidden Gem with Gulf Flavor

Tucked right along the Florida-Alabama state line, the Old River Grill at Flora-Bama is the kind of spot that feels like you just stumbled onto something special. It’s casual, coastal, and just the right amount of rowdy—exactly what you want after a sun-soaked day on the Gulf.

What to Order:
Don’t even think twice—get the fried crab claws. They’re crispy, salty, and addictive, served hot with just the right amount of seasoning. Pair it with an ice-cold beer or a frozen Bushwacker (you’re at Flora-Bama, after all), and you’ve got the ultimate post-beach bite.

Atmosphere Check:
Think picnic tables, live music in the background, and views of the Old River that stretch out toward the Intracoastal. It’s beachy and barefoot-friendly, filled with travelers, locals, and folks who just got off the water. You might hear a few "Roll Tides" or "Go Gators," but everyone’s there for the same reason—good food, good drinks, and laid-back vibes.

The Perfect Farewell:
Still in my swimsuit, I couldn’t resist one last dip—this time at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club, just steps away. The golden light reflecting off the water and the soft, quiet stretch of sand felt like the perfect send-off. It’s that kind of moment you don’t plan—but always remember.

Whether you stop by for lunch, dinner, or just drinks with a view, Old River Grill is that no-frills, full-flavor Gulf Coast spot that turns into a core memory.

What Are Crab Claws?

Crab claws are a coastal delicacy made from the meaty pincers of blue crabs—typically the claws are removed, cleaned, and served either fried, sautéed in garlic butter, or blackened with seasoning. Unlike crab legs or lump meat, claws offer a bite-sized experience packed with rich, sweet flavor and a slight briny kick that’s signature to Gulf seafood. They’re especially popular along the Gulf Coast and are often served as appetizers or small plates.

The Unexpected Ending: Grace in the Unplanned

At the small PNS airport (12 gates, one terminal, no lounges), I dropped off my rental car—smooth and contactless. But 20 minutes after takeoff, our flight turned back due to electrical issues.

Delta handled it like pros: hotel, meals, and transportation vouchers were handed out quickly and without drama. I was genuinely grateful.

We stayed at the TRU by Hilton—modern, clean, surprisingly luxe for an overnight stop.
And yes, I finally got my shower. The sulfate-free toiletries smelled amazing.

I flew out the next morning and made it back to Detroit before sunset.

Final Thoughts: Why I Travel Solo

This trip wasn’t perfect—but it was exactly what I needed. No agenda. No pressure. Just space to breathe and think.
